Dear Self,
“Your relationship with yourself sets the tone for every other relationship you have.”
Previously we tackled Insecurity. This month, we’re talking about relationships. Disappointed by love? Hi, old friend. Heartbreak? We’ve been there. (It gets better, we promise!) Wondering if you’ll ever fall in love with the right person? Seriously, it feels like waiting forever.
FIRST COMES YOU, THEN COMES LOVE
Whether you’re single and ready to mingle, in a long-term relationship, or dating a roster of people as long as an NBA starting lineup, we’ve all been in a relationship of some sort. And yeah, it can get complicated.
Question: What would you define as a healthy relationship?
Is it making dinner together? Sex on the regular? An easy, open line of communication? These are all important. But to get there, ya gotta start with you.
First think about the ways you keep yourself healthy. Before you go bending over backwards to make someone else happy, make a list of the things that bring you joy and fulfillment. Maybe it’s meditation or running marathons. Getting your brows done? A passion project? Dancing around the house in your undies? (We support this.) Whatever it is, it’s all about you. Set aside time to take care of you each day — physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. You’ll be full of love to give someone else, and yourself.
Now go put on your EBYs and do a happy dance. A booty shake does wonders for the mood. (We don’t think your partner will mind, either.)
